For decades the great Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang has been directing exquisite examinations of alienation, isolation, and the fleeting beauty of human connection featuring his muse Lee Kang-sheng. Days is one of his best, sparest, most intimate works. Lee once again stars as a variation on himself, wandering through a lonely urban landscape and seeking treatment in Hong Kong for a chronic illness; at the same time, a young Laotian immigrant (Anong Houngheuangsy) working in Bangkok goes about his daily routine. These two solitary men eventually come together in a moment of healing, tenderness, and sexual release. Among the most cathartic entries in Tsai’s filmography, Days is a work of longing, constructed with the director’s customary brilliance at visual composition and shot through with profound empathy.

"Over the past thirty years, Tsai and Lee have created a body of work unlike any other in world cinema, capturing urban ennui and desire amid the ethereal, neon-lit dreamscapes of Taipei and other Asian metropolises." – Dennis Zhou, The New Yorker

"A masterpiece." – K. Austin Collins, Rolling Stone

"A quietly aching stunner from one of our great filmmakers. Gorgeously sensual. With Days, Tsai Ming-Liang has made something exquisite and rare: an elegiac, autumnal work that also feels like an artistic breakthrough." – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

Four Stars! An extraordinary movie. Intoxicating.“ – Simon Abrams, RogerEbert.com

Days is an act of love, an expression of commitment—to a man, to an image, and to the cinematic medium. What Tsai Ming-liang has done for a generation of movie-watchers is incalculable; his films have been nothing less than a reconstitution of how, where, and why we look.” – Michael Koresky, Reverse Shot
